The Nursing Executive Council, in collaboration with the directors of patient care services/nurse executives throughout our system, is committed to increasing nursing specialty certification by emphasizing two important investments, CE Direct and the FreeTake™ program. CE Direct provides our nurses, pharmacists and social workers complete access to more than 700 accredited online continuing education courses to ensure up-to-date clinical knowledge, supporting participation in the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP), meeting state licensure requirements, and maintaining and supporting the earning and renewal of specialty certifications. FreeTake™ is a program designed to lessen the fear and financial burden of failing a national certification exam, thereby reducing common barriers of advanced certification. Our health care system now has an enterprise-wide contract allowing nurses to take national certification exams twice before having to pay for the exam. The tests are available in several areas, including critical care, pediatrics and education. Earning an advanced degree and obtaining professional nursing certifications demonstrates to patients and families that our nurses have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide the highest quality care to our patients and their families. Clinical Advancement Program (CAP) and the launch of Nursing Grand Rounds Shriners Hospital for Children’s system-wide Clinical Advancement Program is a professional promotion program that fosters growth in clinical practice. Prior to 2018, several of our hospitals had their own “nursing clinical ladder” or program. In January 2018, a new system-wide CAP was launched for front-line nursing and patient care services professionals. The program supports professional inquiry and advancement, provides opportunities for career development

and provides recognition within our health care system. CAP empowers the clinician to analyze their own practice, identify goals for further development aligned with organizational strategic priorities, and seek recognition for their own level of practice achieved. The CAP program goals work to inspire staff to be leaders and to broaden the depth and breadth of experience within our health care workforce by: 1. Optimizing Patient Outcomes and Patient Satisfaction 2. Enhancing Retention and Recruitment of Staff 3. Maximizing Individual Leadership Potential 4. Improving Work Environment 5. Providing Professional Opportunities In January 2020, the members of the first “class” of the new program, representing 11 of our locations, were acknowledged as advanced clinicians and clinical experts. Fifty-three of our staff have achieved advanced clinician status, which means they have acquired an in-depth knowledge about the care of a particular patient population, and an appreciation for the many factors that influence care and demonstrated competency in their core knowledge area. Twenty-three of our staff have achieved clinical expert status, which means the clinician is at the highest advancement level, and demonstrates foresight in planning patient care. The clinical expert is recognized as an expert in their areas of specialization and is adept at negotiating conflict and in collaborating with others. The System Clinical Advancement Board launched a system-wide CAP Portfolio Presentation video conference in May 2020 during National Nurses Week. This was a celebration of the CAP participants, showcasing their amazing

accomplishments and contributions to the organization. Nursing Grand Rounds, Celebrating Nursing Excellence Our Nursing Executive Council (NEC) was excited to announce the system- wide launch of Shriners Hospital for Children’s Nursing Grand Rounds. The first Nursing Grand Rounds event occurred Feb. 27, 2020, across all of our locations in four different time zones. Our goal is to celebrate our professional nursing staff and provide a system-wide forum to share clinical expertise and experiences, nursing best practices and other topics of interest that will help strengthen inter-professional collaborative practice, improve patient outcomes and enhance patient experience across the system. For our inaugural presentation, 277 inter-professionals attended the discussion on Trauma Informed Care (TIC) led by Maggie Gould, MSN, RN, CPN, the clinical educator at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland and leader of that location’s Trauma informed Evidence-based Driven by research Inspired (TEDI) Team. The presentation inspired attendees to come together and investigate how they could develop and implement a TEDI Team at their locations, which supported our goal of coming together as a system. The NEC is dedicated to building a network of innovative nurses who inspire nursing excellence, safe nursing practice, exceptional quality outcomes, and positive patient experiences. The DAISY Award Recognitions Across our health care system, 16 facilities currently participate in the DAISY Award® program. The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards excellence in nursing in more than 4,300 health care facilities and schools of nursing. The program was created by the DAISY foundation to recognize the clinical skills, extraordinary compassion and care exhibited by nurses every day.
