Nursing and Patient Care Services Lead the Way Investing in our workforce

Shriners Children's has made considerable strides in its goal to stabilize and elevate our patient care services workforce. The goal is to ensure we are and remain the employer of choice. Attracting and retaining the top talent is critical to our healthcare system’s ability to provide the highest quality care to each and every patient. To this end, a number of initiatives have been launched to support nursing and patient care services employees. Among these is a continuing education model, so that every employee has the chance for clinical advancement. While previous education efforts focused on our hospitals, we are now deploying educators to all sites, something we have never done before. Market approach: As our healthcare system evolves, nursing and patient care services are also transforming, building a strong infrastructure to support the high level of patient care that Shriners Children's is known for. This includes how we educate and communicate with our workforce. Adopting a market approach is an effective method for leveraging our resources and expertise as a system. Our nursing market leaders support the healthcare system’s goals in a number of ways and are an important vehicle to disseminate information. This works both ways — they communicate system priorities down to their locations, and they also surface and share information from the local level. They actively participate in market board meetings. Having market leaders promotes better alignment as a healthcare system. Through this channel, we can communicate system best practices and endure standardization of care. “This is a new model for us,” said Chief Nursing Officer Beverly A. Bokovitz, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN. “We have seen a lot of success in the markets where we have launched a market approach. Our Northeast market is the most mature at this time, with the others coming along.”
