Annual Report 2023-2024

measuring outcomes helps improve clinical decision-making Improving the tools we have and creating new ones to drive quality care Measuring functional outcomes in our inpatient rehab units

The WeeFIM data is able to be aggregated and benchmarked against our peers. In 2023, patients in Shriners Children’s IRUs had an average length of stay of 19 days, while patients in other specialty hospitals had a length of stay of 38 days. The WeeFIM length-of-stay efficiency score is the most important measure of the effectiveness of a rehabilitation program because it indicates how quickly a program is able to improve a child's functional abilities. Shriners Children’s inpatient rehab score has consistently outperformed similar facilities and the national benchmark. In 2023, Shriners Children’s length of stay efficiency was 1.72, compared to other specialty hospitals at 1.21. This indicates that patients at Shriners Children’s make more functional gains per day while in our IRUs and their stay in the hospital is shorter as compared to other specialty hospitals. In 2023, unique questionnaires administered: 770 Spine Appearance (SAQ) 1,164 Scoliosis Research Society (SR-22R) 185 Early Onset of Scoliosis (EOSQ) 65,066+ PROMIS

Therapists use a multitude of outcomes tools to measure functional change. One tool that Shriners Children’s uses to measure outcomes in its Inpatient Rehab Units (IRUs) is the WeeFIM II ® , or Functional Independence Measure for Pediatrics. The WeeFIM II measures the patient’s function in the areas of walking, dressing, bathing, eating, problem solving, etc. and the burden of care on the patient’s caregiver. This tool is administered when the patient is admitted to and discharged from the IRU and provides valuable information to the clinician and hospital or clinic leadership. This valuable information informs clinical decision support and education, assists with management functions, improves research and aids in quality improvement practices.
