Donor Relations

A Huge Effort The donor relations staff raises funds that help fuel the mission and vision of Shriners Hospitals for Children. The staff at both headquarters and our health care locations collaborate on fundraising strategies and campaigns that cultivate new donors and help deepen the commitment of current donors. Staff maintains and develops relationships with supporters through a number of different engagement and giving opportunities that align with our donors’ interests. From direct mail to major gifts, online giving, special events and corporate partnerships, the donor relations staff works to involve donors at every level. In 2019, more than 1.2 million incredible donors gave a total of more than $400 million to carry out the mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children. Our donors allow us to provide the most amazing care ever to children around the world with orthopaedic conditions, burn injuries, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate. The work of the donor relations staff is essential to the future of our health care system. Both headquarters and local departments create, strengthen and sustain lasting relationships with our donors to maximize Shriners Hospitals’ ability to meet both the immediate needs of our patients and the long-term strategies for their health and well-being, as we work to ensure their future success as adults. Our 2019 year was successful in both increasing donor acquisition and expanding our revenue channels. We developed new opportunities to reach donors and provided new giving streams. These included texting with supporters at special events, expanding our direct response television to Hispanic markets, solidifying corporate partnerships with LYFT and Build-A-Bear,

and developing new communications on planned giving opportunities. Staff raised $400 million, including $55.5 million in online gifts. More than 820,000 supporters gave through our national direct mail campaign, raising $49 million. In addition, 145,000 monthly sustainers helped support our health care system. Our planned and major giving team raised $16.8 million and documented more than 165 bequests, which helps secure Shriners Hospitals’ future ability to care for children, no matter where they live. Because of the efforts of the donor relations team and the endless generosity of our donors, we continue to provide the children and families who depend on us with exceptional care, regardless of their ability to pay for services. Efficient Fundraising In addition to raising considerable amounts for our health care system, the donor relations staff works efficiently. Our efforts help ensure that, across the health caresystem, 83 cents of every dollar raised directly supports Shriners Hospitals for Children. This metric has also contributed to our organization earning the highest possible rating from Charity Navigator for the fourth consecutive year.

to new funding opportunities that align with a donor’s philanthropic interests. Giving Tuesday The donor relations digital team, which oversees all online fundraising, had an amazing 45% growth in their Giving Tuesday Campaign compared to the previous year. The one-day event raised $1.2 million through the generous support of 13,161 donors. Reviewing previous years, the team learned that many current donors were unaware of the national Giving Tuesday event, marked as a day of giving and solidarity for people across the country to support charitable endeavors. Discovering this, the digital team was determined to increase awareness and response through expanded digital efforts. The team used patient stories and pictures that portrayed patients “Going the Distance” to share our impact with supporters and to motivate donors to "Go the Distance" in support of the children in our care. In addition, the digital team integrated additional online resources and strategies never before used to create a more robust Giving Tuesday initiative for each location to use through their social channels and direct donor contact. Women & Philanthropy In July 2019, the Women & Philanthropy program launched in conjunction with the First Lady’s Program at Imperial Session in Nashville, Tennessee. Women & Philanthropy empowers all women, diverse in age, interests and backgrounds, to make a difference by combining their commitment to giving and supporting the efforts of Shriners Hospitals for Children.
