The focus of this effort is the promotion of a universal philosophy that promotes improved workplace safety, organizational performance and patient outcomes.
Addressing the Needs of Our Children: Safety First
Teen suicide is a disturbing societal issue. Shriners Hospitals is working to address the situation. Since the beginning of 2018, Shriners Hospitals for Children has worked diligently to successfully implement a suicide- screening tool that would reach more than 5,500 patients ages 10 and older. This five-question-screening tool allows the front-line clinical staff to take any necessary steps needed to address each patient’s mental health needs and to provide individualized guidance and support. Our decision to join the small group of pediatric hospitals that have implemented universal suicide risk screening signals the beginning of an inevitable and necessary change to the standards of care for suicide prevention. To further support the care of our children, the inaugural session of our Nursing Grand Rounds in February 2020 focused on Trauma Informed Care (TIC). This is an example of an organizational structure and treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing and responding to the effect of all types of trauma experienced by our children and their families. At Shriners Hospitals, becoming “trauma informed” means clinical teams recognize that our children and their families often have many different types of trauma in their lives and we are dedicated to promoting a culture of psychological and emotional safety while they are in our care. FOCUSED on Outcomes Throughout our health care system, unsurpassed quality care is provided for each patient, whether they are cared for in our hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers or clinics. Our nurses lead at every level through direct patient care and beyond, focusing

on quality monitoring and ongoing improvement. In 2015, the system- wide nursing and patient care services dashboard was developed to influence day-to-day operations. In 2019, the Nursing Executive Council set a strategic priority to evaluate the current structure and data by ensuring criteria meets the evolving patient needs as we look to the future of nursing and patient care services. Patient Experience The patient experience is an important measure of the quality of care for our patients and families. In collaboration with our medical affairs team, patient care services and Press Ganey Associates, we have developed new targeted surveys for each of our specialty areas. The surveys include system-wide custom questions, peer group comparisons and Press Ganey recommended metrics to measure on a quarterly basis. In addition, we have implemented a Patient Experience workgroup, which includes directors of patient care services and performance improvement specialists from throughout the system. This collaborative workgroup aims
New Knowledge, Innovation and Improvements
The Magnet domain of new knowledge, innovation, and improvement is the cornerstone of technology integration, evidence- based practice, and innovative ideas and concepts. Nursing Healthcare Technology Optimization and Innovation Continues In July 2018, patient care services initiated the process of updating the nursing documentation system in the electronic health record (EHR) for nursing staff. By working in collaboration with Cerner®, our EHR vendor, we were able to evaluate the current state of nursing’s electronic documentation and determine areas for improvement. The initial nursing optimization project went live, March 5, 2018, at all U.S. and Canada locations simultaneously.
