Nursing Report
timely. In early March of 2020 as the world entered an unprecedented time, The Joint Boards, Executive Team members and the Medical and Nursing Executive Councils came together as never before to address the many aspects of how the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic would impact Shriners Hospitals for Children, our patients, families and staff. I have been humbled by the spirit, dedication, caring and compassion our leadership and staff have demonstrated during this time. This year we welcomed Jeanine Ann Marie Scholl, MSN, RN, APRN, NE-BC to our patient care services Her role is vital to our departmental transformation as we align to provide care in more locations and closer to our patients’ homes. Building upon our legacy of care, while looking ahead to the future, requires us to think differently, embrace technology and reduce variances in processes while retaining the uniqueness of the care we provide. Scholl’s expertise supports this imperative by ensuring structures and processes align system-wide to support growth and success to meet the future needs of our patients and families. As we seek to define excellence in nursing practice Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet® Model to frame 2020-2023 strategic priorities. The Magnet Model provides the recognizable structure to demonstrate our health care system’s best work. In the pages to follow, we share examples of transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, as well as new knowledge, innovation and improvements. As we continue to build structures and processes globally, the Nursing Executive Council adopted the American leadership team as corporate director of nursing excellence.
under each component of the Magnet Model, we will continue to strengthen the impact and influence nursing has across Shriners Hospitals for Children in the years to come. Looking ahead at the future of our health care system, international patients and strategies to provide care closer to their homes is essential. As lead executive team member for the Shriners Hospitals for Children International Strategy, I enthusiastically embrace the Joint Boards’ January 2020 strategic vision: “To be the globally recognized resource for specialty pediatric care, training, and research aimed at maximizing every child’s potential. Treating more children in more places and closer to their homes, building international capacity, leveraging our brand, expertise, membership and mission, and optimizing the use of our resources is at the core of the work.” In the pages that follow, more information is shared regarding our new international strategy. In closing, our greatest strength is our people and their connection to our mission. As chief nursing officer, I am proud to honor the nurses and patient care services staff throughout our system for their dedication and for always placing the care and safety of our patients above all else. I also want to thank our nobles and ladies, for their commitment and for all they do to ensure this amazing philanthropy continues to be strong and vibrant in the years to come. I hope you enjoy the following update. Respectfully, Marjorie McEttrick-Maloney, RN, BSN, MPA/H Chief Nursing Officer Shriners Hospitals for Children
A Message from our Chief Nursing Officer

In addition, several of our nurses have publications in peer-reviewed journals. We also participate yearly in The DAISY® Award, an international program that rewards excellence in nursing. Nurses Leading theWay 2020: The Year of the Nurse and Midwife As chief nursing officer, once again, I am honored to share nursing and patient care services highlights with you. 2020 is the bicentenary of the birth of the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. The World Health Organization’s executive board designated 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife” to honor the critical contributions nursing and midwifery have made to global healthcare. At that time, no one imagined we would be facing a global health crisis, which made the declaration even more
