One of highlights of the year’s efforts was the airing of Lexington patient Madison’s appearance on CMA’s Country Christmas special where she performed an original song about her experience as a Shriners Children’s patient. The earned media team’s pitch led to coverage across the country, sharing the journey of Madison’s care. Another touching story that went viral across the nation featured Chicago hand surgeon Dr. Felicity Fishman and the colorful drawings she makes on patients’ casts to give them something to look forward to post-surgery. The story ran in the Washington Post and was then picked up by CBS Evening News , which ran it twice on broadcast, as well as in their digital space. The story then went viral throughout the country, reaching nearly 250 media outlets for a publicity value of more than $800,000.
