POPS care continues to Expand in New Ways New facility helps Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services reach more kids

“Pediatric orthotic and prosthetic care is a specialty service. It’s not just fitting small adults,” said JoAnne Kanas, DPT, CPO, corporate director of pediatric orthotic and prosthetic services. “Children are our only focus, so we understand the unique requirements of their growing bodies and how those requirements change and evolve as children get older.” It’s been a successful year for Shriners Children's Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services (POPS). In August 2023, a first freestanding POPS facility opened in Tampa, Florida. The Tampa POPS clinic accepts outside referrals, welcoming both first time and existing patients who are in need of care. Previously, all the children fitted with our devices have been Shriners Children's patients. Now any child can benefit from the services POPS provides in Tampa. The POPS team, in conjunction with Shriners Children’s, is expanding their presence internationally to bring the orthotic and prosthetic care we provide closer to home. The plan will be different depending on location, volume and other needs. Our healthcare system has two central fabrication facilities that serve all Shriners Children's locations. One is in Tampa and the other is at Shriners Children’s Portland.

Certified practitioners in orthotics and prosthetics in all of our 19 locations can measure, mold and/ or image a patient to size them. They load that information into computer-aided design software, which creates custom orthotic and prosthetic devices. Then those specifications are sent to the fabrication laboratory in Tampa or Portland, where the device is created and sent back to the location and the patient for custom fitting, adjustments, repairs and delivery. What used to take a couple of hours to complete, now can be modified and into production within 20 minutes. There is a pride that Shriners Children’s has always been on the forefront of technology in the pediatric orthotics and prosthetics industry. We uphold our commitment to the families we serve by not only providing innovative care, but by also offering new ways our families can access that care. 49,880 Orthotic devices delivered in 2023 Prosthetic devices delivered in 2023 1,972
