SC Portland Outcomes Report 2023

CHILD LIFE Our certified child life specialists are trained in child development and help reduce the stresses associated with the hospital experience. They teach patients coping skills through offering opportunities to play, learn and interact with others in an emotionally and socially safe environment. Play experiences help children express fears and misconceptions of hospitalization and medical procedures. Services include procedural support, pain management techniques, preoperative teaching prior to surgery, group activities and education about upcoming procedures/ hospital visits. Additionally, our child life specialists facilitate a number of special activities including therapy animals, musicians, magicians or costumed characters, or holiday-themed parties. ACCESS TO CARE Shriners Children’s Portland is the only pediatric orthopedic specialty hospital in the Pacific Northwest. The Portland Shriners Hospital serves children from across Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, and Western Canada. Our highly specialized medical team often draws patients from all over the United States and internationally. We continually focus on improving access to our trusted specialists and eliminating barriers to our specialized orthopedic care. Our hope is to ensure all children in need of pediatric orthopedic medical care receive it by caring for more kids in more places. In order to make care accessible to patients wherever they may live, we offer a range of services to expand our reach, including telehealth visits and outreach clinics. Each year, Shriners Children’s Portland staff travel to the locations of our outreach clinics in order to bring excellent orthopedic care closer to our patients. These clinics occur in Pendleton OR, Bellingham WA, and Anchorage AK. Shriners Children’s Medford, a standalone clinic, serves children with orthopedic needs in Southern Oregon. Additionally, Shriners Children’s Portland is a Spine destination center for international patients and domestic patients. SHRINERS CHILDREN’S MEDFORD Shriners Children’s Medford clinic is an extension of Shriners Children’s Portland, conveniently located for families in Southern Oregon. The clinic provides specialized care to children up to age 18 with orthopedic conditions from in-toeing, knocked knees, fractures and injuries to the more complex pediatric orthopedic conditions. Patients receive all services in a family centered environment, regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status. William Hohl, M.D. is specially trained in pediatric orthopedics, which means children who come to Shriners Children’s Medford Clinic see a doctor with a high-level of specialty training in areas that include clubfoot, cerebral palsy, scoliosis and many other orthopedic conditions affecting children. Our staff also provide fracture care, such as re-alignment, casting and post fracture follow up.
