Siblings Max, Chase, and Olivia are thriving today, but their journey started with uncertainty. All three have a rare genetic disorder affecting their hands, specifically their thumbs. When the eldest, Max, was born with his particular anomaly, three thumbs on one hand and two on the other, parents Tess and Scott faced overwhelming fear and many questions. From Max’s first appointment in 2003 to Olivia’s final surgery in 2024, the family has experienced the extraordinary power of continuity of care. Charles Goldfarb, M.D., an internationally renowned hand surgeon at Shriners Children’s, has been with them every step of the way, performing 18 life-changing surgeries over the past two decades.
