A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHIEF NURSING OFFICER

Together, all strive to create and support the culture of innovation and collaboration needed to successfully transform our care and models of care delivery. In the pages to follow you will read a few examples exemplifying these efforts. In closing, I want to stress that our greatest strength is our people and their commitment to our mission. As chief nursing officer, I am proud to honor the nurses and the patient care services staff throughout our system for their dedication, as well as for always placing the care and safety of our patients above all else. This year I conclude 30 years of professional nursing practice with Shriners Hospitals for Children. I want to thank you, nobles, ladies and staff, for the pleasure and opportunity to do my best work for the children entrusted to our care. Having started my Shriners Hospitals career as a staff nurse in the burn ICU at the Boston hospital and concluding as your chief nursing officer, being part of Shriners Hospitals for Children has truly been a gift.

We have learned how to share a smile or identify the face hidden behind an N-95 mask and eye protection, feel the true meaning and warmth of a comforting hand now enclosed in gloves for even the briefest encounter, and how to communicate the strength of an embrace while respecting social distance.

The public learned what we have known for many years from working in environments where facemasks have been routine – to focus on the eyes above the mask to see the kindness, the concern and the deliberate focus. The COVID-19 pandemic has not defined nor derailed nursing and patient care services from our focus on the future, emphasizing professional education, interprofessional collaboration, innovation and systemness. To say this has been a challenging and unforgettable year for all, including nursing and patient care services personnel, is an understatement.
