HIGHLIGHTS IN OUR QUEST d EXCELLENCE IN MEDICAL CARE

COMMITTED TO OURMISSION The mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children is to provide high quality pediatric specialty medical care in a supportive environment, offer excellent educational opportunities for medical professionals and to improve medical knowledge through innovative research efforts. The staff of the department of medical affairs is dedicated to fulfilling this mission. The department of medical affairs strives to ensure that we provide our patients with excellent care in an efficient manner, while maintaining a nurturing and encouraging family- friendly environment. To reach that goal, the department creates, implements and oversees policies and care management programs designed to strengthen best practices, promote accuracy and efficiency, ensure we are offering excellent care to our patients and families, and achieve quality patient outcomes. Our staff also establishes and reviews system-wide education programs for our medical professionals, as well as policies and procedures that enhance patient care, improve documentation, ensure patient safety and increase efficiency. In the simplest terms, the work of the department of medical affairs is meant to improve what we offer our patients and families. To do this effectively, we

make every effort to stay ahead of the many changes occurring in health care, and adapt and update our policies, procedures and protocols as needed. LEADERS IN ORTHOPAEDICS One way the excellence of Shriners Hospitals for Children in pediatric orthopaedics is clearly demonstrated is through our leadership presence in the prestigious, dominant organizations in the field. Here are two current examples:

The award is given to a former or current Section on Orthopaedics member who has provided outstanding leadership and service to the organization. Excellence in education, patient care, mentoring of younger members, volunteer work and service, research and character are all considered. Dr. Raney is the first woman to receive this award. Dr. Raney attended college, medical school and orthopaedic residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at Shriners Children’s Florida. She has worked at the Shriners Hospitals locations in Tampa, Honolulu and Portland. She has spoken internationally and nationally and published articles on her sub-specialty interests, including cerebral palsy, gait analysis, limb length inequality/deformity, clubfoot and hip dysplasia. A NEW PRESIDENT Diana L. Farmer, M.D., FACS, FRCS, chief of pediatric surgery at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California, has been named president- elect of the American Surgical Association for the 2021-22 year. She is the third woman to be named to this position in the association’s 141-year history. The association is known as the nation’s oldest and most prestigious

Last October, Ellen Raney, M.D., pediatric orthopaedic physician at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland, was presented the Distinguished Service Award by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in the Section on Orthopaedics.
