AnnualReport2021

A NEW BRAND As we update our health care facilities, processes and programs, we are also updating our brand. We will be introducing a new phrase – Shriners Children’s – to identify our work. It fits in well with current trends in health care nomenclature and in today’s fast paced, brief-is-better world. At the same time, the phrase clearly honors our founders, and identifies who we are and what is important to us. We are Shriners and we care for Children. We are also updating the geographical identifiers for some of our locations to more accurately reflect their primary markets. For example, Pasadena will become Southern California and Springfield will become New England. We look forward to the enhanced recognition and clarity we believe these changes will bring. RESEARCH THAT WILL CHANGE LIVES This year, there have also been exciting developments in our corporate research department. While concerns over the pandemic have stalled the official opening of our new Genomics Institute in Tampa, Florida, the amazing efforts to find answers continue. The work of the Institute will bring us closer to discovering the genetic causes of conditions we treat, and allow us to one day create more specific, targeted therapies. Our new Genomics Institute takes our research to an even more personalized, patient-centric level that will lead to more individualized treatment options and improved outcomes for patients. This genetics-based approach to medical care, known as precision medicine, is more than a hope or a dream. It is becoming a reality, and one day it could even be the norm. With the establishment of the Genomics Institute, we are moving closer to the goal of understanding the specific and individual genetic causes of orthopaedic conditions and disabilities such as clubfoot, scoliosis and osteogenesis imperfecta (also known as brittle bone disease), as well as many others.

local leadership levels. That spirit is what made it possible for us to accomplish so much this year, despite the constraints of a global pandemic. We look forward to the end of this deadly virus, and an even brighter, better future for our unique, compassionate and generous health care system. Thank you for your support, and for all you do for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

We are proud to be at the forefront of this major step toward bringing new hope and healing to children and families all over the world. In addition, we continue to work with the Georgia Institute of Technology to develop devices to assist patients with limb movement and function. The new initiative creates pilot research projects and tools that align with the goal of improving the lives of our patients. Seven projects will begin in 2021. Shriners Hospitals for Children are places of hope. Every day, in our locations across three countries, we help our patients discover the power of hope. Then, we step back and watch as they overcome incredible physical challenges with grace, confidence and strength. We are proud of all of our patients, and honored to help them achieve their goals and live their dreams. We greatly appreciate the teamwork and the spirit of support and cooperation at the Joint Boards and
