Planning for the Future

Shriners Hospitals for Children Is Taking Ambitious Steps Toward the Future We are a people of hope. Although we are unsure of some aspects of the future, especially because of potential long-term effects of the coronavirus crisis, we are continuing to prepare Shriners Hospitals for Children for its second 100 years, recognize our achievements of the past year, and implement our strategic plans to restructure and streamline our health care system. We will be ready to meet the needs of the future, and the expectations of both our patients and families and the ever-evolving health care industry. A Different Approach This past year, our locations in Tampa, Florida, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, began serving their patients and families as outpatient centers, with inpatient surgeries and services available through affiliation with other local health care facilities. They are the fourth and fifth locations in our health care system to move to this more effective and efficient care delivery model. As we make these changes at our facilities, we also expand our presence in the regions by creating alliances with other health care providers. For example, our Twin Cities location in Minneapolis is working with another hospital that will provide inpatient services, and allow our physicians to perform patients’ surgeries there. In addition, UnityPoint (which has several locations in the Midwest) will embed our surgeons in their health care system. One example of that would be our physicians staffing pediatric orthopaedics at Blank Children’s Hospital, a UnityPoint facility in

Des Moines, Iowa. We have also established a relationship with Boys Town National Research Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, to help provide greater access to orthopaedic care for children across Nebraska and surrounding areas. This collaboration will make receiving quality orthopaedic care more convenient to our more than 500 patients from Nebraska. Currently we are providing telehealth, orthotics and prosthetic services and outreach clinics at Boys Town. Using that same philosophy with our Tampa location, surgeries are done at another local hospital, and a grant agreement has been made with the prestigious UFHealth organization in Gainesville, Florida, a program associated with the University of Florida. Additional arrangements are in the planning stages to extend our reach, and provide convenient care to children We intend to develop many more access points like these throughout the country, which will ultimately significantly enhance our reputation as a leader in pediatric subspecialty care, as well as increase our ability to care for our patients closer to their homes. and strengthen our presence throughout both Florida and South Georgia. We anticipate that, in the near future, our Cincinnati hospital will be re-located within Dayton Children’s Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Repositioning our Cincinnati hospital within Dayton Children’s will allow us to continue to deliver high-quality burn care and other services in a space that better meets the needs of our patients more economically Another Innovative Care Model

and efficiently. In addition, our Houston, Texas, hospital is preparing to consolidate with our Galveston location, where it will be better positioned to become a leader in pediatric specialty care. In addition, staff of our Boston, Massachusetts, facility continue to seek the best solution for sharing space and partnering with another health care entity. A Long-range Goal In preparation for our long-term future, last November, the Joint Boards of Shriners Hospitals voted to expand services at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California, and to develop it as a Center of Excellence model. The Boards’ vision is for the Northern California Shriners Hospital to become a destination of choice distinguished by excellence in burns, orthopaedics, pediatric surgery, acute rehabilitation and more. We will also seek to form new partnerships and create a stronger clinical presence in communities within the Northern California hospital’s catchment area, allowing us to serve more kids in more places. Discussions are underway regarding the specific structure, collaborative elements and plan for this new initiative. As we all know, our world was changed dramatically this year through the coronavirus pandemic. Difficult as that situation was and is, our hospital staff responded admirably, and quickly implemented Fast Track Video Visits.
