Our Mission
At Shriners Hospitals for Children, our physicians include patients and families in the decision-making process, ensuring that each patient’s care plan addresses their individual goals, needs and expectations. We do all we can to provide each patient with a complete set of treatments and services that will help them to overcome challenges and recover to the fullest extent possible, and go on to have full, productive lives. When we opened our first hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1922, we were primarily responding to the unmet needs of children coping with the aftereffects of polio by offering orthopaedic care to children and families in need. At that time, Shriners vowed that no child would go without care if they did not have the financial means available. Today, Shriners Hospitals for Children is one of the largest pediatric sub- specialty health care systems in the world, offering amazing care for orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. And, just as we have for nearly 100 years, we provide all care and services regardless of the patient or family’s ability to pay. We continue to be determined to offer care to as many children who could benefit from our services and our approach to health care as possible, regardless of where they live. Consequently, we are increasing, streamlining and standardizing our domestic and international outreach efforts, re-evaluating
for us to reach more children, and provide care for both new and established patients closer to home, making obtaining care from Shriners Hospitals much easier. In addition to providing care for children where they live, our physicians and clinicians are known for sharing their experience and knowledge with other medical communities,
thereby sharing the unique benefits of our health care system’s approach to care with even more children.
The Mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children is to:
